Alicudi+is+a+tiny+island+in+the+Aeolian+archipelago.+Tourists+come+here+during+the+summer+to+eat+local+fish+in+restaurants+or+join+fishermen+on+their+fishing+days.+At+the+tourist+boat+arrival+on+the+small+rusty+dock%2C+an+old+man+shows+a+tourist+how+to+clean+the+fish.+%0A%0AThis+fisherman+arrived+on+the+dock+in+the+early+morning+with+a+black+plastic+tank+full+of+fish.+He+left+this+tank+in+the+shade+with+some+frozen+water+bottles+inside+and+a+little+sea+water.+Within+an+hour%2C+all+the+fish+in+the+tank+were+either+dead+or+dying%2C+many+with+their+mouths+wide+open+desperately+seeking+dissolved+oxygen.+When+the+first+tourist+boat+was+about+to+arrive%2C+the+fisherman+began+slaughtering+the+fish+so+they+would+be+ready+to+sell+to+the+newly+arrived+tourists.%0A%0AThis+kind+of+fishing%E2%80%94small+boats+owned+by+one+family+or+sometimes+by+just+one+old+man%E2%80%94is+very+well+regarded+by+the+public.+These+fishermen+are+considered+victims+of+the+decrease+in+fish%2C+even+though+they%E2%80%99re+actually+the+cause.%0A%0AIn+this+area+thousands+of+small+boats+set+hundreds+of+miles+of+nets+and+lines+every+day.+Most+of+them+use+illegal+devices+or+techniques%2C+but+it%E2%80%99s+almost+impossible+for+the+local+authorities+to+control+such+a+large+number+of+vessels.%0AAs+an+animal+rights+activist+I+can%E2%80%99t+ignore+this+problem.+We+need+to+show+how+fishing+is+killing+the+sea.+We+can%E2%80%99t+consider+small-scale+fishing+a+sustainable+way+to+provide+fish+to+consumers.+The+seas+are+near+the+point+of+no+return%3B+we+have+to+stop+exploiting+them+now.%0A%0AIn+2020+We+Animals+Media+asked+me+to+join+activists+for+the+NGO+Sea+Shepherd+in+documenting+fishing+practices+in+Mediterranean.+I+spent+two+weeks+with+Sea+Shepherd%E2%80%99s+Operation+SISO%2C+a+campaign+to+tackle+illegal%2C+unreported%2C+and+unregulated+fishing+in+the+Aeolian+Archipelago.
