Description

Coregonine fishes including Lake Whitefish (Coregonus clupeiformis) and Cisco (Coregonus artedi) have long supported fisheries in the Great Lakes and are vital to the ecological stability of these systems. Deepwater coregonines including bloater (C. hoyi), Kiyi (C. kiyi) and Shortjaw Cisco (C. zenithicus), were once the primary deepwater prey species in Lake Huron. During fall 2015, Alpena Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office (Michigan) staff conducted fall spawning surveys around Lake Huron’s Les Cheneaux Islands (LCI) to determine Cisco spawning locations, assess maturity and peak spawning times, and collect gametes for pilot rearing projects – these efforts are linked to a Cisco stocking study to be implemented in south-central Lake Huron in FY2018. Cisco samples were also collected from the LCI and Drummond Island to support Fish Health assessments and comparative morphology studies. During the spring of 2016, Alpena FWCO staff conducted larval surveys in Lake Huron’s Thunder and Saginaw Bays as well as the Les Cheneaux Islands to assess the spatial and temporal distribution of larval coregonines in these areas.
