The range has seen some modifications in recent times and now features a strong cold forged body and frame. This traditional series also features a multi disc carbon drag, which dissipates heat in the drag evenly and exerts very high drag pressures.

Each model also has an anodiesed body and spool so they are up to the pressure of regular saltwater use. They also have a larger style handle with rubberised grips, Super Stopper, Assist Stopper, and run smoothly on three os Shimano's patented A-RB bearings plus one roller bearing. The Calcutta has been catching fish in New Zealand for over two decades, and is set to do so for many more years to come.
